I’ve read many books that tell of life on the ‘other side’, but none as enjoyable and thought-provoking as Catherine Kennedy’s. Particularly enjoyable – and convincing – are her experiences of people from the ‘other side’ making their presence known to her, and to her husband Antonio, through the medium of automatic writing, often supplying verifiable information. In the course of her work as a spiritual healer, she has often inspired in people the confidence to tell of their own experiences, some of which (respecting their anonymity) she relates here, together with a review of well-documented accounts of individuals whose journey through life has led to convincing encounters with the ultimate ‘beyond’.

In the Preface she tells of how her spiritual work is leading her into the areas of trance mediumship and trance healing, and of her intention to write a second book on these developments. Judging by this, her first book, the second will be well worth awaiting.

Some books relating to the ‘other side’ are creepy and shallow, dwelling uncritically upon the kind of sensationalism and spookiness that so frustrate the endeavours of those who want to be taken seriously when they speak of realities beyond the superficiality of modern life. Catherine’s book is the exact opposite of this. The spiritual experiences of which she writes are rooted in everyday life, and her reflections on God, reductionist materialism, and the closed minds of those who deny the very possibility of there being more to reality than our mere physical existence, make this book a particularly valuable introduction to the whole subject.

Catherine’s book offers comfort and reassurance to those who mourn the loss of a loved one. It also challenges, from a generously open-minded and broadly Christian perspective, both the fanaticism of those who insist that only their narrow religious tradition is truly ‘of God’, and the scepticism of those who dismiss as nonsense any suggestion of there being transcendent realities beyond the here and now. Beautifully written, this is an engaging and compelling wake-up call to our materialistic age, and a must-read for anyone who looks for evidence of there being more than just oblivion when this mortal life is over.
